Battle of Wireless Ridge

The Battle of Wireless Ridge was fought as part of the Falklands War between the UK and Argentina, over sovereign rights to the Falkland Islands. The British were continuing their advance toward the Falklands capital of Stanley, where the Argentine forces had established their stronghold. Wireless Ridge was one of a series of seven strategic hills near the town, which would give the British forces control over the surrounding area.

The battle for Wireless Ridge was the second phase in the overall British plan to successfully recapture Stanley. The first series of attacks secured Two Sisters, Mount Longdon and Mount Harriet, while the second involved taking both Wireless Ridge and Mount Tumbledown. The third and final phase involved fighting for Stanley itself, in what many assumed would be hand-to-hand street fighting.

The British began their advance on Wireless Ridge from the area surrounding Mount Longdon, supported by naval and tank fire. When they reached the hill, they found that the Argentine forces had already withdrawn. As the British attempted to consolidate their position they were greeted with a heavy bombardment from the Argentine forces and they retaliated with a massive attack, which forced a rapid withdrawal by the defenders. Both sides continued to bombard the other with heavy artillery and machine gun fire.

The Battle of Wireless Ridge resulted in a victory for the British, which ended with the surrender of the entire Argentinean force on the islands later that day.
